Early Life

Born on April 1, 1961, Susan Magdalane Boyle grew up in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. Her father, Patrick, served as a WWII veteran and worked as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, was a shorthand typist. Also a singer at a venue called the Bishop’s Blaize, her father was an influence on her early interest in music. Susan was the youngest in a family of nine, having four brothers and four sisters. Throughout her childhood, she faced bullying and grew up under the impression that she had a learning disability due to a challenging birth that left her deprived of oxygen. However, as an adult, Boyle discovered she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome, accompanied by an “above average” IQ. Her struggles in school led to few qualifications, although she trained with vocal coach Fred O’Neil and enrolled at Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle invested her own savings into creating a professionally cut demo, which she distributed to record labels, radio talent shows, and local and national television. Her demo showcased performances of tracks like “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” these performances found their way online. Additionally, early recordings, including her rendition of “Cry Me a River” on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” which she contributed to in 1999, became available on the internet after her television debut on the show.
