It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

At the age of 25, Rob relocated to Los Angeles and quickly formed a connection with Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. Inspired by his background in the restaurant and bar industry, McElhenney conceived a show focusing on a group of self-absorbed, morally questionable friends who operate an Irish pub in Philadelphia. He presented his concept to friends Howerton and Day, who eagerly agreed to participate. The trio produced a pilot episode on a budget of $200. This pilot garnered several offers from different networks, leading them to choose FX.

Upon its launch in 2005, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia achieved critical acclaim, earning numerous awards. Rob mentions that the show occupies most of his free time, yet he still engages in other acting opportunities. Some notable appearances include guest roles in Lost and Fargo. After its renewal in 2002, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became the longest-running live-action comedy series in United States history.

In 2020, Rob McElhenney developed and starred in the web series Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet on Apple TV+. The series delves into the video game sector, humorously examining the dynamics among game testers, writers, and creative directors in a fictional video game studio. Additionally, he co-created and served as executive producer for 2022’s Welcome to Wrexham, a FX sports documentary focusing on a Welsh football club.

Personal Life

For the first season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob McElhenney cast actress Kaitlin Olson as “Dee,” with whom he later formed a romantic relationship. The couple tied the knot in California in 2008 and are now parents to two sons. Rob has lauded his wife, calling her “the funniest woman in show business.”

In November 2020, Rob McElhenney, along with Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, acquired the Welsh football club Wrexham after establishing a business partnership and securing support from the Wrexham Supporters Trust. They did not provide any upfront payment, but they committed to investing around $2.6 million for infrastructure enhancements. By April 2023, Wrexham achieved promotion to League Two, becoming National League champions, marking their return to the English Football League after a 15-year hiatus.

McElhenney announced the establishment of a new entertainment and tech company called Adim in June 2022, co-founded alongside Melissa Kaspers, Chase Rosenblatt, Richard Rosenblatt, and Spencer Marell.
