Early Life

Born Durk D. Banks on October 19, 1992, in Chicago, Illinois, Lil Durk faced numerous challenges as he grew up in the harsh Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Following his release a few months later, he focused on resuming his rap career, dropping his second mixtape “I’m Still a Hitta” in 2012. The track “Sneak Dissin’” began to attract attention, and he started to appear as a guest performer on tracks by artists like Lil Reese, Fredo Santana, King Louie, and Chief Keef. Another mixtape was released in 2012.

On November 6, 2020, King Von, a close friend of Durk’s, was murdered in Atlanta. Then, on June 6, 2021, Durk’s brother, Dontay “DThang” Banks Jr., met a tragic end at a nightclub in Chicago. In July 2021, he suffered a home invasion where he and his fiancé exchanged gunfire with the intruders, who subsequently fled, thankfully without injuries to anyone involved.

Following a weapon charge in 2011, Lil Durk faced ongoing legal issues. After being released on bond, he returned to serve an additional 87 days. On June 5, 2013, he was arrested on South Green Street in Chicago for allegedly discarding a loaded handgun into his car when approached by police. Held on a bond of $100,000, his attorney claimed to have nine witness affidavits that supported Durk’s innocence, with one witness stating the gun belonged to him. Durk was ultimately released in July 2013.

Hours before a scheduled concert in Philadelphia on September 2015, a shootout resulted in one man’s death and damage to Lil Durk’s tour bus from gunfire. Reportedly, he was not involved and faced no arrests or questioning. In August 2016, he was apprehended on felony gun charges, but the judge later dismissed all charges, clearing him.

In June 2019, Durk along with King Von faced attempted murder charges, following accusations of robbing and shooting a man outside a busy Atlanta drive-in over a Jeep Cherokee and $30,000. After spending a few weeks in jail, both were released on bonds of $250,000 and $300,000 respectively. Eventually, in October 2022, the charges were dropped.
